There is going to be a summer movie season in 2022. While the last two years have seen delays and cancelations, the theatrical experience is trying to recover. Perhaps no film on this list has been delayed as much as Top Gun: Maverick, but the Paramount blockbuster is finally going to touch down in May after an out-of-competition bow at the Cannes Film Festival. Superheroes are also back in a big way with Disney / Marvel officially kicking off the summer season with the new Doctor Strange movie.
Below are some movies that I’m personally excited to see over the summer. While Jurassic World: Dominion isn’t included, I have no doubt that the movie is going to be gigantic. Instead, I’ve decided to highlight some movies from smaller distributors like Neon and A24. (Just for completion sake I have included a listing of some of those big movies).
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6th)
Directed by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams.
Marvel movies are becoming more difficult to follow. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a prime example. Looking at the footage released for the movie thus far, it looks like knowledge of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Disney+ series WandaVision will be helpful in setting up the events of this movie. Sam Raimi is directing and it is his first feature film since 2013 and his first superhero picture since he completed the Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire back in 2007.
Men (May 20th)
Directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) and starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear.
Men is a good example of a movie living up to its title. The movie stars Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley as a young woman who is trying to pick up the pieces of her life after the death of her husband. The catch is that this vacation spot features a whole lot of men with unwanted opinions. It’s a great concept and one that seems so obvious I wonder why it hasn’t been done before.
Top Gun: Maverick (May 27th)
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) and starring Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Lewis Pullman. With Ed Harris.
I think it’s finally coming out. After two years of delays and multiple date changes, Top Gun: Maverick is coming. Given how much we’ve seen of the movie through numerous trailers, I don’t have much more to add to the movie. I did see that Lady Gaga is contributing a song to the soundtrack which is pretty exciting. The original Top Gun was well known for its chart-topping soundtrack with hits like Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” and Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away”, so it makes sense that the new film would try a music tie-in as well.
