As everything winds down toward the Holiday break, I’m sharing my top picks for the movies of 2024. As a Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) member, I submitted picks in many categories, including the top 10 movies of 2024. Some of the movies below are ones I’ve already discussed in earlier newsletters so I’ve reshared comments from those newsletters and linked to them if you’d like to read more.
Again, this year, I was honored to contribute a list to RogerEbert.com. If you’d like to see that list and lists from other journalists who’ve made contributions to the website, click here. Hopefully, you’ll find another good movie to watch because that’s what lists like these are for.
Honestly, I thought 2024 was a weak year for movies. When I heard what was winning over critics in Telluride, Venice, and Toronto this year I was kind of disappointed. Now that’s not to say there weren’t worthy movies, but I found myself far less excited about the movies I was watching. Maybe that’s feeling the ramifications of the strikes of 2023. Considering two movies that were delayed because of the strikes ended up in my top 10 means that’s a very likely reason.
