Sundance 2022 is quickly approaching. Movies start on Thursday night and then there will be a plethora of titles to view.
In the previous newsletter, I detailed some of my most anticipated movies of the festival. Instead of dropping daily newsletters and clogging up your inbox, I’ve decided that all the daily dispatches will be launched directly on the newsletter and social media. That means that if you want daily coverage, the best way to do that is to follow @mhcovill and @itsthepicpod on Twitter and visit here over the weekend.
Next Tuesday I’ll do one newsletter that will be sent to everyone, that will hopefully contain general thoughts about the festival, and links to the coverage (whether that is the written coverage here or the audio coverage via the It’s the Pictures podcast).
The latest episode of the podcast launched recently. John Gilpatrick and I discuss our favorite movies of 2021.

One of my favorite journalists working the television beat, Vox’s Emily VanDerWerff, talks about how the best shows on television aren’t trying to trick viewers anymore.
I’ll be talking about Station Eleven in more detail below the paywall, but I really enjoyed it. If you’ve seen the HBO Max exclusive as well and want to read more about it Vulture journalist Kathryn VanArendonk listed some behind-the-scenes stories of the production. Another great article is this interview between Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall and showrunner Patrick Somerville.
The Cuphead Show (Netflix, February 18th) has launched its first trailer. While the animation is a mixture between the 1920’s Fleischer and Disney art, and using animation concepts of today. I’m not sure of the audience for this one outside of those familiar with the original video game, but I’m interested.
Monday Night Football was a bust, except that a new trailer for Marvel’s Moon Knight series starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke launched. Another Marvel show to get excited about. The only one that I’ve personally finished is WandaVision.
Stay tuned after the Paywall for some additional thoughts on Station Eleven.
