It’s the Pictures needs your help! With the end of the year rapidly approaching, I’m trying to hit a major subscriber milestone. If you like my work and believe in independent journalism, sign up for a subscription today or share how much you love this newsletter. Every little bit helps.
As the last post of 2024, I figured it’d be fun to share some of the work I’m proud of over the last year. If you don’t read RogerEbert.com, Paste Magazine, or Polygon, I recommend them highly. Unfortunately, I’ve had fewer freelance opportunities in 2024, but I still have some articles that I’m proud of and would like to share here.
Goodbye 2024.
I’d like to mention the first piece is one I wrote for Polygon a few years ago. It’s about Lord of the Rings. I’d like to say it again because it appeared in print in the Polygon.com / Susana Polo release, Year of the Ring. If you’d just like to read my piece without buying the book you can click below:

If you are interested in an unofficial book on all things Lord of the Rings, you might want to purchase the book.
Earlier this year, I wrote about the Netflix original Blue Eye Samurai. If you like adult animation and you haven’t seen this yet, you need to give it a try. You can read why I recommend it so much in this article from Paste Magazine.
My favorite TV series that I got to review in 2024 was easily the return of the X-Men in the Disney+ original, X-Men ‘97. It was so much more than I was expecting and might be my favorite X-Men adaptation in a long while.

For the newsletter, I did a few different interviews. The first one I want to share is more recent when I talked with director Nanfu Wang ahead of her new documentary.
One of the other interviews I wanted to highlight was with Aleks Phoenix who creates fan posters and has experience in the industry.
One of my most recent TV reviews was of the Peacock exclusive series, The Day of the Jackal which got renewed for a second season. I might’ve liked it more than most, but I was thoroughly entertained throughout.

I also want to shout out the podcast, which you can find in multiple places including YouTube and Apple Podcasts. This year was a big change for the show since we said goodbye to long-time co-host John Gilpatrick and welcomed new co-host Evan Crean into the fold. We’ve already had some great guests on the show in 2024 and I’m excited to see how the show grows and evolves into the next year. When I started podcasting in 2016, I had no idea it’d last this long. I’m proud of what the show has accomplished during that time.
